Common Mistakes When Measuring Blood Pressure at Home

Measuring and logging guide ยท Last reviewed November 2, 2026

Most home measuring problems are small habits, not big errors. Fixing them makes your log more useful to you and your clinician.

Not resting first

Measuring straight after walking in, climbing stairs, or a stressful call can give a reading that does not represent your usual. Sit quietly for about five minutes before you start.

Talking or using your phone

Chatting, texting, and watching something exciting during a measurement can change the result. Stay still and quiet until the cuff finishes.

Crossed legs and an unsupported back

Sit upright with your back supported, feet flat, and legs uncrossed.

Cuff over clothing or in the wrong place

Put the cuff on bare skin, on your upper arm, at about heart level.

Measuring right after caffeine, exercise, or smoking

Wait at least 30 minutes after any of these before taking a reading.

Taking only one reading

One reading can be a fluke. Protocols ask for two readings about a minute apart, and you should record both.

Dropping readings you do not like

Record every reading. Leaving out numbers makes the log harder to interpret. Add a short note about circumstances instead.

Changing the routine

Different times, arms, or devices from day to day make comparisons less clear. Pick a routine and keep it.
