Morning and Evening Blood Pressure Readings

Measuring and logging guide ยท Last reviewed November 2, 2026

Blood pressure naturally changes through the day. That is why a home log keeps morning and evening readings in separate groups instead of blending them into one number.

Why both matter

Readings taken at different times of day can differ for ordinary reasons such as sleep, activity, meals, and stress. Averaging morning and evening separately lets you and your clinician see each time of day on its own, as well as the overall picture.

Taking a morning reading

  • Measure at roughly the same time each day.
  • Sit quietly for about five minutes first, and avoid caffeine and exercise beforehand.
  • Ask your clinician whether you should measure before or after taking any medicine, and follow what they say.

Taking an evening reading

  • Choose a consistent time, for example before dinner or a little before bed.
  • Use the same arm, position, and cuff as in the morning.
  • Rest first. Evening readings straight after a busy day or exercise may not reflect your usual numbers.

Keeping them apart in your log

Note whether each reading was morning or evening. Home BP Log averages them separately and also shows an overall average, along with how many readings went into each.
